Shirakawa-go (白川郷) is a spot in Japan unlike any other, an atmosphere different from the Feudal Era (1185-1867, 封建時代, Hōken-jidai) feels of Kyoto (京都, Kyōto) or the modern urban jungle of Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō).. Walk down the streets of Ogimachi village, the largest village in Shirakawa-go with thatched Gassho-zukuri (合掌造り, Gasshō-zukuri) houses along the streets.

01 Shirakawago Overview Nestled in the Shogawa River Valley that spans Gifu and Toyama Prefectures, Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed region. It's famed for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old, with steep thatched roofs and a unique architectural style that evolved over many generations.

There are two options for Shirakawa-go visitors - either take the bus on a day trip or book one of the farmhouses to stay overnight in. Note the maximum time you can stay at any farmhouse in the town is one night.

Looking for an awesome travel guide and itinerary for Shirakawago

Journey time is between 50 minutes to 1 hour 7 minutes. From Kanazawa - There are around 10 departures daily from Kanazawa (Kanazawa Station Bus Terminal #2) by bus. Some of the buses stop at Gokayama while others are direct to Shirakawa-go itself. For non-stop buses, the journey time is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Ogimachi, Shirakawa-go's largest village and main attraction, makes a good day trip from Takayama, or a stop on the bus journey between Takayama and Kanazawa.The best way to experience the town, however, is to stay overnight at one of the farmhouses, many of which now serve as minshuku.. Gokayama is a little more difficult to access and requires a change of buses in Ogimachi.
