The battery for the ST-E2 was expensive ($20 each) and this adds a lot of value to the transmitter. The ST-E3 is also significantly smaller and lighter than the ST-E2. Cons: - As mentioned in the video, price is the biggest con. - The 600's are a big bigger and heavier than the 580's. - The lack of optical controls and AF assist on.

If anybody is interested, the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT (version 1) works OK with the EOS R - except the AF assist ofcourse. Isn't the YN-E3_RT radio transmission only, like Canon's ST-E3-RT? That won't work with the OP's optical ETTL 580EX II. True. I stated that just in case anybody reading this thread was wondering about other flash triggers on the R.

Canon has announced a new Version 2 of their ST-E3-RT trigger for controlling Canon speedlights off-camera. If you were hoping for some massive upgrade, though, you're in for a little disappointment. According to what I can see, it basically only adds only three new features over the original ST-E3-RT released in 2012. And not for everybody.

The Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 weighs only 3.5 oz without the non-included-in-the-box 2CR5 6v battery. The ST-E2 is very small compared to master flashes and mounts on an EOS body's hot shoe (or on a Canon Off Cammera Shoe Cord OC-E3 for extra creativity). It was originally a reply to an earlier post but may not be easily discovered. I believe I have proven the theory that the Canon ST-E3-RT (ver. 2) / 600EX II RT wireless system is dropping wireless links because of external electromagnetic interference. As I mentioned in an earlier post I ran a number of tests yesterday with the ST-E3-RT sender.
